13 FOLDS OF THE AMERICAN FLAG

The 13 folds of The American Flag each carry symbolic meaning, traditionally representing the 13 original colonies and various aspects of American values and history.  While not officially mandated by law, these interpretations are widely recognized and honored, especially in military and Veteran contexts.

1. The first fold of The American Flag is a symbol of life.

2. The second fold of The American Flag is a symbol of our belief in eternal life.

3. The third fold of The American Flag is a symbol of honor and remembrance of the Veterans who have given their lives for the country.

4. The fourth fold of The American Flag is a symbol of our weaker nature and reliance on God.

5. The fifth fold of The American Flag is a tribute to our country.

6. The sixth fold of The American Flag is a tribute of our hearts as we pledge allegiance to The American Flag.

7. The seventh fold of The American Flag is a tribute to our Armed Forces who have protected our country and our flag against all enemies.

8. The eighth fold of The American Flag is a tribute to those who have entered into the “valley of the shadow of death” and a tribute to Mothers.

9. The ninth fold of The American Flag is a tribute to womanhood.

10. The tenth fold of The American Flag is a tribute to Fathers who have given their children for our country.

11. The eleventh fold of The American Flag, in the eyes of a Hebrew citizen, represents the lower portion of the seal of King David and King Solomon and glorifies the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

12. The twelfth fold of The American Flag, in the eyes of a Christian citizen, represents an emblem of eternity and glorifies God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

13. The thirteenth fold of The American Flag reminds us of our national motto of “In God We Trust.”

The American Flag is folded for practical and symbolic reasons.  Folding our flag neatly keeps it from dragging on the ground, prevents damage, and allows for respectful storage or presentation.

At a military funeral, The American Flag is unfolded and folded to honor the deceased and symbolize their service and sacrifice, as well as the ideals of the nation.  The American Flag is first draped over the closed casket, then carefully folded into a triangle shape, with the blue field and stars visible, before being presented to the next of kin.  The triangular shape takes on the appearance of a cocked hat, ever reminding us of the soldiers who served under General George Washington, and the sailors and marines who served un Captain John Paul Hones.

Additionally, at a military funeral, three rifle volleys are fired in honor of the Veteran’s service and sacrifice.  The three spent shell casings are placed in the folded flag representing duty, honor, and country.
