On Thursday, September 2, 2010 in keeping with a tradition that started in 1970, a group of World War II Veterans, now members of  The American Legion Post 71 in North Augusta, gathered at The Post 71 Home for a group picture.  This traditional picture occasion was the brain child of the late North Augusta newspaperman Sam Woodring, who was a World War II veteran and a member of Post 71.  Mr. Woodring proposed in 1970 that on September 2, and every five years thereafter, any World War II veterans in the North Augusta area should gather for a group photo to commemorate the Japanese surrender ceremony that took place on the deck of the American battleship USS Missouri, on September 2, 1945, thereby ending all hostilities of World War II. This particular photo commemorates the 65th Anniversary of that historic occasion.
